about

Once again, this beat gave me a lot of space to play around and try different things within my verses. This song was untitled until we recorded it and Sharp had the idea to put the Fred Hampton quote at the beginning of it, foreshadowing my "music with the medicine" part at the end of the song where I go from just styling with wordplay, to Black upliftment.

lyrics

A bad man. Dealt a bad hand
Still won the book with no spades, like God damn
Been dope since Kangol told us about Roxanne
And I won’t touch the stage til you pay me in advance
The Carolina Kaiju invites you to witness
A changing of the guard, me and Sharp the new litmus
Never got an F on a test I was given. I’m gifted
Burn bridges with the cruelest of intentions. Efficient
Coast to coasting with no wasted motion
The flow is worldwide although Raleigh is the locus
I’m from a town where success seems so hopeless
Now every joint I pen is my next magnum opus for real
Top Quality. Solace is in my sovereignty.
Modest but strong following, bonded like Sean Connery
Pardon. Your last offering, nothing but cacophony
Honest. My rhyme book is considered a large armory. Holla
Too smart. You charlatans ain’t conning me
Gotta be my moves make me smoother than glazed pottery
Fathered many styles, you can’t copy me properly
My heart’s beyond belief and that’s putting it modestly

Middle name Raheem. The style’s furious
A message to them Boyz N The Hood and those curious
This independent rap game ain’t luxurious
A life sentence. It don’t matter who the jury is
Be sure to watch out for them vultures that be circling
Thirsty for the glory, they ain’t never put the work in it
Them bird brains chirping but I’m Ming The Merciless
You a flash in the pan who don’t deserve to win
These pertinent bars is curtains for y’all
Try to front and play it off while you nervously scoff
I’m from them dirt roads where you gotta drive slow
The ghost of Jim Crow threatened our survival
I’m liable to mix the music with the medicine
Do it for my folks who went to school with no accrediting
They lie and tell you that your melanin’s irrelevant
We post-racial since we had that Black president
Fetishize our trauma. I go on like a comma
Keep swimming through the sharks and piranhas
But we all just trying to reach our own nirvana
While some of us are just trying to make it to tomorrow
